[A]pps to look out for is a regular feature where we take a look at an app that may have gone under your radar, and may in fact be worth a look.

Snow Bros

Ever since Android launched, there have been many attempts to port ancient arcade games to the platform, with some being more successful than others. Luckily, Snow Bros, a new version of a game that was first seen in 1990, is one of the better arcade conversions on Android.

The game sees you take control of the titular Snow Bros, as they attempt to traverse a series of challenging levels in a Bubble Bobble style gameplay environment. The game has been translated really well, with a thoughtful set of touchscreen controls that work just fine, and you are never going to complain of missing real controls too much here.

The graphics retain that 16 bit charm they always had, and look pretty sharp on Android, and I never once felt that there was any slowdown at all during my extended time with the title. The music and sound are equally good.

There are an impressive 50 stages to battle through, creating snowballs and taking out more than 20 different kinds of enemies, with some decent boss battles to occasionally play through. In each stage there is an invincible Pumpkin guy that will start to chase you if you take too long, so be as quick as you can on each level.

There are two modes included in this release. The first, One Coin mode is really for hardcore and experienced players, as you only get one credit to play with, and the second is more suited to Android, as it lets you select the starting stage of your choice.

Overall, Snow Bros is a great little game that will keep you coming back for more and is a real treat, especially at its current sale price. (Note Android 2.1+ only)
