The basic idea behind the game is to defend your base against an onslaught of alien creatures on a variety of locations on different worlds.
Each level places your base in the centre of the screen and the marauding beasts come from the edges of the screen in an attempt to destroy your base. You must simply tap the screen to fire a shot at each alien, with multiple rounds usually required to take one down.
If they manage to reach your base they do massive damage, with a health bar draining alongside more visual indicators such as flames, to let you know how much trouble you are in. Once the bar reaches zero it is game over.
In between each stage you can spend the energy gained from killing the aliens on either repairing the damage to your base or adding new defences and weapons.
You can use new weapons to directly kill the monsters such as mines and rifles but you can also kit out the base with snipers and rocket launchers to really help you out.
All this is needed as the game soon gets really tough, and in fact I think that the base tower upgrades take too long to unlock. Maybe there should be a cheaper third option to get some extra support earlier on.
The game is tough but not unreasonably so, and the upgrade system adds an extra layer of depth that helps the game rise above itself a little and the simple story texts between levels are appreciated.
In addition to the main story mode there is a high score based survival mode where you are given just the basic gun to survive for as long as possible, but I think the developers have missed a trick here. I really think they should give you every upgrade at the start of the survival mode so you are fully tooled up with the aliens at maximum: this would make the mode super fun and if some of the aliens dropped ammo it would make for an interesting challenge.
The presentation is decent and the game is ad-supported(there is an ad-free version available) although one small gripe is the location of the ads on the menu screen as they are a little too obtrusive.
The game looks very much like an old public domain game which is a good thing as you can see the love and graft that went into making it.
Overall, I liked Storm the Ship. It is pretty simple, both to look at and to play but the upgrade system and extra mode elevates it above what it would otherwise score and the fact that it is completely free is a brilliant bonus.
Well worth checking out on Android, Storm the Ship is a fun little time waster.Submit your app!
