However, many of the apps are simple timewasters or if they are useful, simply do tasks that Websites and desktop software do better but made to fit the small display and touch screen.

So, it is always nice when something genuinely useful comes along and does something that neither a Website or desktop PC can do, and really leverages the abilities of a smartphone well.

Pocket Scanner, as you may have guessed form the title, is a scanner in your pocket. Not a dumbed down, simplified scanner but the app pretty much turns your humble iPhone into a fully featured handheld scanner. Of course, this is incredibly handy for business and commercial use, and the applications for home users are far reaching, but I doubt anyone would deny that they spent the first ten minutes of time with this app just playing around, having fun and seeing what they could scan.Pocket Scanner iPhone Screenshot 1 200x300 Pocket Scanner iPhone Review screenshot

Once you have finishing playing around with it, you will find an extremely useful tool that goes way beyond what you may expect of it. No, it is not just a camera app dressed up as a scanner, as the sharing and file management options really open this up as a true work tool that may become part of your daily work routine.

Here, in the words of the developer, are the app’s main features:

Pocket Scanner enables you to capture, digitize and keep valuable information at your fingertips. Different from a camera app, Pocket Scanner incorporates leading image processor, file manager, multiple file sharing options, and powerful built-in PDF Reader engine. The image processor optimizes the scans so you don’t lose the quality of the documents.

✔ Enterprise Level Document Scanner
With the leading edge algorithms, Pocket Scanner optimizes the resolution of your scans by auto-detecting document edges, providing enhanced image processing, and removing shadows of your documents.

✔ Scan Everything, Miss Nothing
You can quickly scan business cards, whiteboards, newspaper articles, multipage documents and anything you can think of, and quickly save or share them within a matter of seconds.

✔ Pocket Scanner Keeps You and Your Files Organized
Pocket Scanner enables you to easily arrange customizable scanner projects and sort scanned images and documents into multiple folders with its refined yet easy-to-use interface.

✔ Export Industry Standard PDF Documents
All scans can be shared and exported as multi-page PDF documents

✔ Password-Protect Scanned Files
Pocket Scanner allows you to password-protected PDF files you have created.

✔ Share Scans via Email or Online File Storage
Conveniently transfer your scans through Email, Wi-Fi, USB connection, and various cloud storage services including Dropbox, Box.net, Google Docs, SugarSync, FTP and WebDAV.

Pocket Scanner Features:
✚ Friendly user interface
✚ Automatic document edge detection
✚ Unlimited scan projects for all kinds of materials and themes
✚ Great file management system
✚ Advanced image processing: Instant brightness, rotation, and color adjustment
✚ Email documents as PDF, JPEG, and save them to the Photo Library
✚ AirPrint

As you can see, you are getting a lot for your money here. The app has very little missing here at all. Maybe Skydrive support would be nice, but that is a personal preference. The user interface is nice and easy to use, and it is simple to log into your Web based storage solutions and upload your scanned documents there with ease.

Overall, this is a fully featured app that should be essential to many business and personal users.
