Romans From Mars, available for iPhone and iPad from the Apple iTunes App Store, is the best mobile game we have reviewed here at The Smartphone App Review for quite some time. Brought to us by Majesco, Romans On Mars has the right balance of simplicity, challenge and addictiveness that mobile games all strive to have.

The basic premise of the game is that you must defend your position from a bunch of crazy Roman Martians, in a fixed first person perspective shooting gallery. You must use a crossbow to kill legions of the little men, with a tap of the screen launching an arching arrow toward the ground.

The arrows take a little time to reach their destination, and with the Romans sprinting towards you at ever faster speeds, you are going to need to think ahead and shoot where the enemies are going to be, not where they currently are. Luckily, the arrows have a generous are of effect when they land, so you don’t have to be pin perfect with your accuracy.

Here, straight from the developer, are the app’s best features:screen568x568 (14)

• Battle endless waves of Martians determined to take over Earth
• Upgrade your crossbow ballista to create the ultimate weapon of destruction
• Unleash your godly elemental powers of Fire, Ice, Earth, and Lightning
• Defend your castle against 10 different types of alien enemies including the powerful Centurion Mech
• Hours of gameplay with 30 achievements to earn!

The game lets you use powerups, such as lightning and ice, to help you overcome the Romans when they threaten to overwhelm you. These are activated using gestures and add a lot of variety to proceedings, and are a welcome addition.

The game is endless, and you can upgrade your weapon as you proceed and it is possible to spend money via IAPs to progress a little faster. There are ten different enemies to fight, from the standard grunts to mechs and bomb carrying foes, and with full Game Center integration and 30 achievements to unlock, there is plenty to keep you occupied in this free game.

Overall, I really liked the style of this game, with decent graphics, addictive gameplay and a real sense of character throughout. Highly recommended, especially as it is free to play.
