Now, don’t get me wrong, but I have reviewed a lot of apps that have location-based search results, including many of the ‘what’s around me?’ variety, so it was understandable that I approached WutzWhere with a certain degree of trepidation. I was worried that the app would just show me the same results as a thousand other apps.
How wrong was I. WutzWhere goes above and beyond what any other app has shown me in my local area of Harwich, UK. With other apps I get a couple of pubs and a shop or two, but WutzWhere has given me an amazing range of shops, pubs, restaurants, medical centres and parking areas.
Many of the listings have photos taken by users, with reviews by real life customers and even tips and hints to get the most out of each venue. Some of the listings were a little out of date, but that is just something that goes along with the format. Maybe a ‘report error’ option direct to the developer from each listing would be a good idea for the future.
Many apps like this are fine for the big cities like New York and London, but useless when it comes to anywhere else, so it is great to find one that gives decent results for smaller locations.
Unlike some of the similar Apps that are available, WutzWhere has 631 ready-to-use venues that are just a click away. The upgraded version of this app has an “All Venues” button which displays venues (items) in 10 major categories:
Arts & Entertainment . . . . . . .51 items
College & University . . . . . . . 39 items
Event . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 9 items
Food . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .158 items
Nightlife Spot . . . . . . . . . . . . 23 items
Outdoors & Recreation . . . . .77 items
Professional & Other . . . . . . .77 items
Residence . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 5 items
Shop & Service . . . . . . . . . .153 items
Travel & Transport . . . . . . . . 39 items
The level of detail that the app can go into with each listing is impressive, although it obviously depends on the information available. With an upgrade, you can view menus in restaurants, get an idea of the general price of food, see if it has WiFi, whether there is parking available and much moire, in addition to the customer reviews and tips. It makes finding somewhere that is just right for you that much easier. The addition of an option of whether a place accepts cards is most welcome.
The app is free and ad-supported, although no ads displayed in my time with it, and the upgrade is a very tempting proposition, as in addition to the above features you also get the ability to send a friend a message detailing your location, as well as turn by turn navigation to your chosen location. The turn by turn option is a great idea and one that may prove too good to resist for many users.
Overall, this is one of the best apps in its class. It may not be as attractive as its peers, but it arguably offers more information and a wider variety of options. The free version is good, but the premium version of the app is excellent and one of the best of its kind I have used. If WutzWhere was touched up a little bit and the visual elements improved, this could skyrocket.
