Dating apps are quite commonplace on iOS now, with hundreds of services all vying for your attention. We all know about the big hitters out there, apps that are synonymous with mobile dating services, but are there other options out there that are worth your time?

Well, Red might just be the next big app to hit the dating scene.

Red, available for iPhone and iPad through the Apple iTunes App Store, is an interesting new take on some familiar app ideas, with a robust offering that manages to have some innovations of its own.

Red uses the classic ‘swipe to like’ feature favoured by other apps, so you view profiles and can instantly swipe right to like someone, or swipe left to pass. It is a good system, which works well elsewhere and also does a good turn here.

Once you are in touch with someone, and they like you back, you can begin a chat to get to know them, all for free. The big difference here is that instead of having photos as a profile picture, you make a very short video. This is a clever idea, as with a video you really get a sense of what they are actually like. A picture can be edited, or be out of date, whereas it is a lot harder create something fake with a video, at least for the average user.

This honesty from the start means that each match is a bit more genuine, and far more likely to be successful.

The app itself is well designed, and has all the features that you would expect from a dating app. Design wise, you would be correct in guessing for the name of the app that the colour red features pretty heavily, but it is done well. The red theme actually helps the app to stand out in a sea of apps seemingly designed from a cookie cutter off white template on iOS.

Overall, if you are looking for a new dating or social app, then Red just might be the place to start.
