Android has a fantastic built in feature where it can make recordings without the user knowing the camera is doing anything at all. Now, this has been used to great effect in many security apps for the platform, many of which we have reviewed here at The Smartphone App Review, but a developer has an app that uses the feature for more of a comical reason.photo prank

Uh Oh – Fun Photo Prank, available for Android through the Google Play store, using the feature to great effect. You essentially hand your ‘victim’ your phone, under the pretense of letting them browse through a few snaps you have taken. They then begin browsing, only to be prompted with the dialog, ‘Would you like to delete all photos?’. No matter what they press, the phone will supposedly delete all your photos, much to your victim’s embarrassment.

Obviously, your photos haven’t really been deleted, but the app will record every painful moment while your (ex) friend struggles with the shock and guilt of what they have done, all on the front facing camera.

You can stop the recording by holding down the volume button, and the video is then automatically saved to your real gallery, where you can then share it with your friends through Facebook, or any channels that your device supports.

It is a clever trick, and an easy one to pull off, and will provide a few laughs. It is not too cruel, is more of a gentle tease than anything else, it uses the capabilities of the format well and it is nice to see a decent prank app that actually works.

The recordings are usually very funny, especially the look of panic on their faces when the ‘All photos being permanently deleted…’ pop up appears.

The app and prank are very good, but I wish there was more than one prank in the app, as the idea has a lot of potential.

Overall, this is a good app with a great prank that provides some harmless fun that you can try on multiple people. Well worth a look if you are after something like this on Android.

  1. How is it good that an app can use your camera without you knowing? Do you normally get recorded in the shower without your permission?

It doesn’t use the camera without you knowing – it is clearly stated in the app description how it uses the camera, and it never uses it without your permission- you literally have to tell it to start recording…and no, luckily my shower doesn’t come equipped with a front facing camera 😉
