Universe Jump, available for Android through the Google Play store, is a vertical jumping game with shooting elements that has bags of presentation, variety and plenty to do.
Now, vertically scrolling games such as Doodle Jump have been around for a few years now, but Universe Jump does things a little differently, as it is one of the few games like this that has definable levels, in addition to an actual shooting mechanic.
You get to choose your character and weapon, more of which are unlocked as you progress through the game. This does give the game a very light smattering of customisation, as well a giving you an extra target to aim for. Unlocking all the characters and weapons will take some time, and is a nice extra benefit to performing well in the levels.
Here, straight from the developer, are the app’s best features:
– Many great levels with awesome graphics
– Lots of deadly weapons waiting to give you a hand in your journey
– Many brave heroes for you to choose
– Campaign and Infinity mode
– Local leaderboards. Beat your friends’ scores!
– Spectacular Bosses to fight
– Helpful power-ups (JET PACK, SHIELD, DOUBLE SCORE, MAGNET … )
The graphics here are excellent. With a design that mixes in characters that look like they were pulled from a 1990s arcade scroller, and lush backgrounds, there is a lot to like visually. Rarely for a game like this, the characters are actually pretty well animated, and look great as they jump, shoot and jetpack their way around the levels.
The majority of the game can be found in the main campaign mode, where the action is split into levels, which includes enemies and bosses to fight. The developer has wisely also added an endless mode to play with once you have finished with the story. This decision pays dividends in terms of replay value, as players really do get the best of both worlds; an enjoyable romp with a story, and a nice infinite mode.
There are local leaderboard included, which is nice but I would like to see some online leaderboards added at some point in the future. Hopefully, it is on the cards. The bosses deserve special mention, as they are superb and provide a good challenge when you finish a level. If only more indie mobile games would include them.
Overall, this is one of the very best vertical scrollers on the market. With different modes and upgrades, as well as good graphics and excellent presentation, this is highly recommended.
