Now I’m not one to pick a real time strategy game when it comes to the iOS platform. Quite a bit of them are tetious or the user interface just doesn’t work. Though seeing some great buzz around this next app, I decided to give it a go.
Anthill: Tactical Trail Defense from Image and Form takes strategy to the next level. Working as a team of ants, you must protect the anthill against enemy bugs and feed the colony. What keeps the game so simple is the user control of the game. Simply draw lines from the anthill to areas you must protect or collect food. Then tap a button to assign either worker ants or soldier ants. The soldier ants will patrol the line and defend while the lines you draw for the worker ants will take any enemy carcasses back to the colony to feed the troops. The pheromone trails drawn will remain color coded so the user will always know what trail coordinates for which ants. Add spitter and bomber ants and it’s all out warfare.
Every level will have tasks to complete and a number of wave attacks to outlast. Protect your fellow ants successfully and be rewarded with stars that will allow you to buy upgrades for your troops. Of course the more you upgrade the better. The entire control system is touch based with no virtual buttons to worry about. The area of play is pretty large as well with quite a bit of area to cover. The simple pinch gestures widen and zoom so you can play the whole area with ease. The graphics are crisp and vibrant giving you plenty to look at as you send you ant troops in for victory. I really love how the tutorial clearly walks you through the game, so all you have to do is enjoy the battle.
Anthill: Tactical Trail Defense is a well executed game of strategy that takes the basic function of the tiny ant and translates it to a great game. Fans of the RTS will definitely appreciate all it has to offer and it replay factor. This universal app is now on sale for $1.99 in the app store.
