Sometimes, you just need to keep an eye on your home, or need to protect your loved ones. Having a live camera feed can be a fantastic tool at accomplishing just that, whether you are using it as an advanced baby monitor, to watch over your property while you are away, or simply to keep tabs on your precious pets when you are absent, a live camera feed can literally be a lifesaver.
Unfortunately, actually getting one for a decent price and with no complications is far easier said than done. From hiring a private security firm to install cameras to setting up a complicated Webcam system, most of the solutions are tricky and expensive. Even the few iOS based solutions are always over complicated and with a premium price tag.
The app allows you to use an iOS device (or computer) as a security camera, streaming live video to a number of devices, such as other iOS devices, a PC or a Mac. The app also functions as a microphone, so you can also hear what is going on, and the speaker of the phone also works, so you can actually communicate in real-time. I can imagine shouting ‘I can see you!’ at a burglar would have quite an effect!
The app also features a motion detector, which I found to work surprisingly well. You can also set the app up to record video automatically at set times of the day, which really is a great feature. The app is very easy to set up, so here are the developer’s instructions:
Step 1: Download the AtHome Video Streamer App from Apple App Store and install it onto your device. A unique Connection ID (also referred to as CID) will be assigned to the device after the AtHome Video Streamer is launched at the first time;
Step 2: Download and install the AtHome Camera app onto another device which you want to use as a viewer, open the app, sign up and login;
Step 3: Select “Add by CID” or “By QR Code” to add a camera, you are all set to enjoy the live streaming!
It really is as easy as it sounds. I had no problem setting things up, and the app worked well using both WiFi and a 3G connection, although there was a bit more judder over 3G. The best way to use this is to grab an old iPhone or Android from a drawer and use that as the camera, make sure it is plugged into the mains, and use your main phone as the viewer. This way you can check in and watch the stream whenever you like, and you are not risking an expensive phone as a camera.
The app works well, is intelligently designed and remarkably easy to use. I would like the option of using several different cameras at once, as I could find no way to do this inside the app, but hopefully this will come in a future update.
Overall, this is a great app that gives you peace of mind with hardly any set up required. It is made all the more impressive by the fact that it is completely free to download and use. Grab it now, before the developer changes their mind and starts charging for it!
