Hit The Spot for iPhone and iPad, available through the Apple iTunes App Store, is a nice little diversion of a game that presses all the right buttons, but just falls short in terms of content, options and modes.
The game is very simple. You have to touch a green spot on the screen, without missing and hitting a blank space, or accidentally touching objects of either differing shape or colour. Every time you touch the correct object, your score goes up by one, with the idea being to get as high a score as possible. You only have a small amount of time to hit the correct object, as the game is over when it disappears.
The more you hit, the higher you score, but the difficulty also increases, until it gets to a stage where it is pretty frantic and difficult.
The graphics are nothing to write home about, but they do have a nice retro feel to them, and the collision detection is, excuse the pun, spot on. There is full Game Center integration, and you can also challenge your friends to play via Facebook, Twitter and the aforementioned Game Center.
The game is a decent test of your hand eye coordination, and is pretty fun and challenging to play within itself, and the price of free can’t be questioned, and neither can the proper compatibility with both iPhone and iPad. The problem is that there is just not enough here, even for a free game.
Extra modes are required here, such as a chain booster mode, or a mode that adds backgrounds to the mix. Simple additions that would add a lot of variety. I would like an arcade mode with stages with themes, so one stage would see everything moving vertically, while the next would be horizontally, etc.
Local high score profiles would also help, adding an extra level of competition for those with only one iOS device.
Like I said, there is a lot to like here, with the developer getting what is perhaps, the most important element; the basic gameplay, just right. However I do believe that, with a few extra additions, this would be a far stronger title, and one that could potentially be very successful.
Still well worth a download, Hit The Spot! will give you a couple of hours of entertainment.
