If you like your puzzle games filled with ‘match three’ style gameplay and overloaded with cuteness, then you can’t go wrong with MeowMix, a feline themed puzzling treat from developer Anix. The thing that strikes you as you begin to play the game is the fantastic quality of the animation on the cats, which is why I give it special mention here at the top of the review. The cats fall and move with such fluidity that shows the attention to detail the developer has used when making this game.
They could have easily just used static icons, like so many other iOS developers do with match three games, so it goes to show just how good these kinds of games can look, if they are in the right hands.
MeowMix plays like a lot of other match three games, although with a smattering Tetris as you must attempt to get rows, columns and mixes of rows and columns to match with the same cat. Match three or more and that line of cats disappears, with more falling all the time. The more you complete at a time, the more you score, and so on.
Here, straight from the developer, are the best features:
Match -3, a mixture of classical lovely games: the player controls falling shapes and chooses what pieces want to delete.
The action takes place in a colorful cartoon world, the main characters – colorful kittens. One of the key features of the game – #mimimi. The player interacts with the kittens, they meow being touched, hold on foot, sharpening claws and yawn.
It plays very well, and has a very addictive core gameplay that holds up well in the face of competition from other similar games. The thing that really makes MeowMix stand out is the cats.
I have already waxed lyrical about the animation, but it is really the level of interaction that the game allows you with the cats, that really makes it stand out. They are so much more than shapes to match as they react to being stroked, touched and more. They stretch like real cats, meow when touched and even yawn and stretch their claws.
It really makes the game come alive, especially when combined with the neat James Pond style music.
The mix of Tetris and classic match three gameplay works well and creates a decent puzzle game, but here it is the cats that are the real stars elevating a good game into a great one, meaning that MeowMix is one game you should pick up right away, especially as it is free.
