Save the Puck HD, available for iPhone and iPad through the Apple iTunes App Store, and for Android through the Google Play store, is a refreshing take on a familiar formula. With a bold and interesting look, Save the Puck HD approaches the casual game genre with a touch of style, and it even has a bit of substance to back this up, as it has an addictive core idea that is well developed.

The game gives you the simple task of preventing a puck from falling off the sides of a circular level. The puck will keep moving and fall off the edge unless you rotate a set of various platforms that are lined along the outer side of the circle. When the puck touches one of these, it bounces in the opposite direction. Miss, and it is game over.

You get judged by how many of these bounces you can keep going for, and it does get harder and harder the longer you survive. It is quite tricky, but not in a frustrating way.

Here, straight from the developer, are the app’s best features:savethepucksavethepuck

Move platforms to bounce the Puck !
Try to save your puck as long as possible !
Get coins to unlock new Pucks !
What’s your best score ?
Press left arrow to rotate the platforms in one direction
and press right to rotate them the other way!

The developer has actually done a fine job of fleshing out the base experience. There are disappearing platforms, collectables and even bosses to fight. The bosses are actually a really neat touch, especially as many games like this don’t bother with them.

There is a progression system, linked to the coins you collect throughout the game, both from pickups but also from bosses. Coins unlock new pucks to play with, and you are going to want to unlock as many as possible as they are all designed with the same level of care and skill as the rest of the game, and there are some really cool pucks to find, like the Ninja Turtles and more.

Overall, this is a stylish, playable game that provides some addictive casual fun. The game is free on all platforms, and comes highly recommended.
