Privacy and personal data is an ongoing safety concern these days. How do you keep your data safe and out of the hands of those that should not have it? Phone and computer trade-ins are common talking points when it comes to wiping your information clean, but what about your car? Privacy4Cars helps users clean old data from their car systems before trading in or selling old cars to keep their data safe. Here is some of the app’s description from the App Store:
YOUR PERSONAL DATA IS AT RISK: Used vehicles are changing owners with prior personal data (e.g. phone logs, navigation history, cell phone address books, etc.) remaining in the vehicle’s Infotainment, Bluetooth, Navigation, or other in-vehicle technology.
WHY CAR DATA PRIVACY MATTERS: Media, regulators, advocacy groups, lawyers, and industry experts are increasingly concerned about the growing amount of Personally Identifiable Information (PII) stored in vehicles and the potential impact of electronic PII being exposed to third parties, or exploited by criminals. Leaving PII in your vehicle when you sell, trade-in, or return a rental car puts you at risk for identity theft.
Privacy4Cars has two options for account setup, register for an account with an email address or sign-in with an existing Google account. Find the manufacturer, model and year of your vehicle in the scrolling logos and name wheels. There is also the ability to search for a vehicle’s VIN or partial VIN as well. Next, find and select the sound system that is closest to the one you have. Swipe through the pictures and when the similar system is found, tap start process.
The next screen will show you a step-by-step visual instruction for what to do next to clear out data on the system and doing a master reset. After following all of the steps, all personal data from the infotainment system should now be cleared. The app will ask if the steps were successful and ask to rate the instructions and add any comments.
Privacy4Cars allows 10 info wipes total with the ability to buy more. This is at $1.99 per vehicle or in multiple packs, 5 at $8.99 up to 50 at $69.99. The app is ad supported with a small banner that runs at the bottom of the screen. It is the largest and fastest growing database of visual instructions of its kind, and I would have to believe it. I was able to browse many car makes and models with years going back as far as 2009 with many results. I found it very simple to use with the photographic depictions included making it easy enough for anyone to follow.
Privacy4Cars is a one-of-a-kind app that helps users protect their privacy everywhere they drive. The app is available in the App Store now for free.
